Jonah Tolchin, a 19-year-old folk-music force, has put the finishing touches on his first full-length record. But the Providence, Rhode Island kid didn’t go it alone. With help from Joe Fletcher, as well as members of The Low Anthem and Brown Bird, Tolchin split his time tracking between the Columbus Theater in Providence, and the analog Dirt Floor Studio in Chester, Connecticut.
Criminal Man consists of 10 original songs, as well as a tune by Texas legend Blaze Foley, whom Jonah considers an influence. “He is my man,” Tolchin says simply, “so damn good.”
Poor Old Shine, a Roots/Americana band from Storrs, CT, joins forces this week with New Wheel Music to release a new EP, “Treadless Soles.” The four original bluegrass-tinged folk songs were written by lead singer Chris Freeman and recorded at the analog Dirt Floor Studio in Chester, Connecticut. Alongside the band’s banjos, saws, and pump organs, the recording features Morganeve Swain of Brown Bird on fiddle.

According to Kurtz, I’ll Explain Tomorrow was conceived on a Valentine’s Day bike ride.
“I thought, well, tonight I’ll write and record a 5 song EP. And so I did,” he explains.
Thoughtful and bare, the EP consists of single vocal takes with fingerpicked guitar accompaniment, spaced out by a haunting reverb.
The tracks are available as a download from bandcamp. Click the album cover above to listen and buy.

This artful EP contains 5 tracks of smart pop music with lush vocal harmonies and orchestral brass and woodwind arrangements. Think Beach Boys meets Crosby, Stills and Nash meets Pink Floyd. Offered up as a pay-what-you-want download from the band’s website. Don’t miss the Moonglows-influenced video for Booty Call.
Some photos from last weekend’s mini-tour with Grimis, basement band, and Elijah Ocean. We’ll be posting more as they come in! (If anybody out there has any shots, please send ‘em to newwheelmusic@gmail.com thanks!)
